What is ESIC?

ESI stands for Employee's State Insurance, which is a social security and health insurance scheme for Indian employees. The scheme is managed by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and provides medical care and other benefits to workers who earn less than a specified amount per month and are employed in certain sectors. 

Who is Eligible for ESIC Registration?

  • An employer who has 10 or more employees in his establishment is eligible to register for ESIC. However establishments with less than 10 employees can also voluntarily register for ESIC.
  • ESIC contributions are mandatory for employees whose gross salary is up to Rs. 21,000 per month. Employees with a salary above Rs. 21,000 can choose to contribute voluntarily.

Contribution Toward ESIC:-

  • Eligible employees need to contribute a total 0.75% of their salary (basic+ allowances).

  • Registered Employers need to deposit 3.25% of salary paid (basic+ allowances) to ESIC corpus every month.

  • The only exemption in paying contribution is to the employee whose daily wage is less than Rs 176/- per day.

  •  Sickness advantages a 70% rate in a salary form if any certified illness exists for a    maximum of 91 days in any year.
  •  Medical benefits to the employee and his family members.
  • The maternity advantage to women who are pregnant is in the form of paid leave.
  •  Employee’s death during his working period.
  • Identical to the above for the case of the employee’s disability.

    • Registration Certificate
    • Certificate of incorporation
    • PAN Card of the business
    • Memorandum of Association
    • Articles of Association of the company
    • List of all employees working
    • List of directors of company
    • List of the shareholders of company
    • Address proof:  Utility bills, Rental agreement, Property tax receipts

Yes. All ESI-covered companies and factories with more than 10 workers and a monthly salary of less than Rs.21,000 (Rs.25,000 for employees with disabilities) must register with the ESIC and contribute to the ESI system. Employees who earn more than Rs. 21,000 a month are exempt from paying ESI.
